CLEARWATER, Minn. -- Cory Broich and son Carter are competing to see who will walk first.

"I think you're going to win," Cory says to his 4-month-old as he holds up the smiling boy.

Life has changed dramatically for Cory, a Clearwater firefighter, since a vehicle struck him Jan. 26 while he was finishing at the scene of a vehicle fire on Interstate Highway 94.

Home from the hospital for more than a week, he's still confined to a bed or wheelchair and is getting used to his new life.

Surveillance video captured the lightning bolt strike the Plaza Santo Cecelia nightclub about 2 a.m. The shock ignited some electronics on a soundstage, but a sprinkler system kept the flames from spreading, Fire Department spokesman Bill French said.

Two firefighters were hurt when they slipped down some stairs, but they were examined and returned to work.
